How to convert

Military time uses four digits. The first two are the hour from 00 to 23. The last two are minutes from 00 to 59. There is no AM or PM label because the hour already tells you which half of the day you are in.

Military → standard (PM example): Start with 1700. Hour 17 is greater than 12, so subtract 12 to get 5 and mark PM. Minutes stay 00. Result: 5:00 PM. Another PM walk-through: 2145 → 21 − 12 = 9 → 9:45 PM.

Military → standard (AM example): Start with 0630. Hour 06 is before noon, so keep 6 and mark AM. Result: 6:30 AM. Midnight start is special: 0000 → 12:00 AM. Noon is also special: 1200 → 12:00 PM (do not subtract 12).

Standard → military (PM example): Take 5:05 PM. Add 12 to the hour: 5 + 12 = 17. Keep the minutes. Write 1705 (or 17:05). Another: 8:00 PM → 2000.

Standard → military (AM example): Take 9:15 AM. Keep the hour and pad to four digits: 0915. 12:00 AM becomes 0000, not 1200. 12:00 PM stays 1200.

Speaking rules

Exact hours take “hundred”: 1700 is seventeen hundred. Minutes take their own words: 1730 is seventeen thirty; 1705 is seventeen oh five. Formal radio traffic may append “hours,” but the digits already carry the time. Avoid saying “o’clock” with military figures.

For a paper grid in 15-minute steps, open the military time chart or download the printable PDF. For shift length across midnight, use the hours calculator.

Minutes → decimal hours (payroll)

Timesheets that want decimal hours divide minutes by 60. This table is minute-level detail for payroll. It is separate from the chart page, which steps by 15 minutes for reading the clock.

Example: a stop at 1730 is often 17.50 on a 24-hour decimal field (17 hours + 0.50). Your payroll vendor may round 0.33 differently for 20 minutes — follow the vendor rule when it disagrees with two-decimal rounding.
